WHIRLE WORX Composter

As part of our junior year industrial design studio, we had the opportunity to create an object that supports the lawn care experience while also being tasked with following an existing brand language.

My solution was The WHIRLE Worx Composter. A composting unit that comes in threes, corresponding to the three stages of the composting process. Each composter is installed on a rotating mount, allowing you to toss and loosen the contents for a fast maturing process. When vertical, the lid opens for easy access, but when rotated 180 degrees, it acts as a chute to dispense the compost into your hopper.

FEATURES

- Pressure fit hinge allows for the user to adjust flow of compost into hopper when rotated.

- Built in venting channels for proper maturation of compost.

- Handy viewing window for progress checks.

- Mounting port for easy instalation and stationary rotation for aeration.

THE COMPOSTING PROCESS AND WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND

To start off composting you should start by spreading a layer that is several inches thick using straw, cornstalks, or leaves at the bottom of the WHIRLE. Then create a "green layer" with plant based waste. Continue alternating until composter is full.

TO COMPOST

1. Identify which unit you want to use and make sure it is in the vertical orientation.
2. Open composter and deposit waste.
3. Securely close composter and give it a spin.

TO DISPENSE

1. Rotate so latch is facing downwards.
2. Unclip latch and position spreader.
3. Let compost flow!
4. Return composter to upright position.

WHY DO PEOPLE NOT COMPOST?

The idea of a modular composter came after identifying the reasons that people compost. People's aversion to coming in contact with decomposing food meant that the solution needed to be fun and refreshing. The next step was to find a way to make the system modular.

WHY ARE WE TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO COMPOST MORE?

Sustainability has become more and more present in our day-to-day lives through many outlets, however, some don't know where to start when shifting to a more eco friendly life style. The goal of the WHIRLE is to get those who are not as familiar with eco friendly lawn care engaged as well as give those who are, a new tool to help the environment.

AGE- 53
OCCUPATION- IT Consultant
LOCATION- Philadelphia

As a young boy in the suburbs of Philadelphia, dave spent most of his quality time with his father out in the yard learning how to tend for their lawn.

However, being part of generation X Dave was not raised with a great deal of awareness when it came to sustainability. He has since been educated but has not completely applied his knowledge when it comes to his lawn care practices .

TASK ANALYSIS FINDINGS

After finalizing the concept of the composter being wall mounted, I needed to find the most effective configuration for all three boxes to move as well as be easy to interact with from a user stand point. People did not respond well to a track that allowed you to reorder the boxes. Final conclusions were that the boxes should move but only in a stationary respect, not x and y.

WORX VISUAL BRANDING

I then needed to deconstruct the Worx visual brand language in order to align the styling of my composter and their products.
